The New York Times Highlights a Unique Cycling Experience for 2025: Sicily Divide

The prestigious international publication The New York Times has included Sicily Divide among its 52 must-visit destinations for 2025, recognizing it as the only Italian cycling experience to embark on in the coming year. This 460-kilometer route, which crosses Sicily’s inland from Trapani to Catania, has been described as a perfect example of a sustainable and adventurous journey, capable of unveiling the most authentic side of Sicily.

Journalist Alex Crevar, who cycled along the Sicily Divide, emphasized its uniqueness:

This itinerary offers a sustainable way to explore the island beyond its beach destinations, distributing tourist flows and avoiding overreliance on motor vehicles. Sicily Divide reveals a more intimate side of the island and helps revitalize communities that, in recent decades, have suffered from depopulation. The route offers everything one could desire from a bike journey: breathtaking landscapes, a rich culture, and a network of welcoming villages.

A Journey Through Nature, Culture, and History

Sicily Divide - New York Times

Sicily Divide is much more than just a cycling route: it is an adventure that spans salt flats, hills, mountains, and ancient villages such as Sambuca di Sicilia and Enna, the highest provincial capital in Italy. Each stage of the journey allows travelers to discover an authentic Sicily, far from the usual tourist trails.

With its various route options, the itinerary includes iconic sites such as the Cretto di Burri in Gibellina, the temples of Segesta, and, in its final kilometers, the majestic Mount Etna, before culminating amidst the historic wonders of Catania. Divided into seven stages along secondary, low-traffic roads, with stretches of dirt paths, Sicily Divide is ideal for gravel and mountain bike enthusiasts.

Sicily Divide is not the only way to discover Sicily on two wheels. The island offers many other cycling experiences, such as the Ciclovia dei Parchi, which crosses some of the most stunning protected natural areas, and the Ciclovia della Magna Grecia, which follows the traces of Greek colonization in eastern Sicily.
