Algarve

The Algarve’s diverse landscapes, beautiful beaches, abundant nature and agreeable climate make it a region that is not only the perfect destination for a beach holiday, but also an excellent choice for nature tourism enthusiasts.

One of the best ways to get to know the region is by cycling or walking, since this lets you enjoy its natural beauty, discover its biodiversity, admire its heritage and learn about its culture. In the Algarve, cycle tourism and walking enthusiasts can find a vast array of well-signposted itineraries and routes, as well as equipment hire and organised programmes.

The itineraries

Whether you do your own thing or use one of the specialised operators, take us up on our suggestions and explore the Algarve from one end to the other. Get to know the Algarve step by step when you take the Via Algarviana, a walking route stretching for 300 km across the inland Algarve, starting in Alcoutim, next to the River Guadiana, and finishing at Cape St Vincent, in Sagres. The route is divided into 14 sectors, none of which is longer than 30 km. Recharge your batteries between each stage of the route by staying at rural tourism properties. Try the regional cuisine, admire the local handicrafts and meet the artisans and locals.

If you prefer to cycle, the Coastal Ecovia is a good alternative. Comprising 12 segments, its stretches along the Algarve coast for approximately 214 km. Pedal alongside the sea and cycle through 12 of the Algarve’s municipalities, from kilometre 0 at Cape St Vincent in Sagres all the way to Vila Real de Santo António.

If you decide to explore the region’s south-west coast, the Vicentine route lets you travel along more than 400 km of pedestrian trails between Cape St Vincent and Santiago do Cacém. Travel the Historical Route and visit the main towns and villages on a rural itinerary boasting several centuries of history and with a connection to the Way of St James and the St Vincent pilgrimages.

Come and familiarize yourself with the beating heart of the Algarve.
